We're an anime podcast taking a look back at some older anime titles on physical media, and seeing if they still hold up or not. A group of friends, a disc of anime, a bottle of wine... Better make it two bottles.

Sep 22, 2021

On this episode, join Dennis, Ed, Karen, and Kate as they discuss Megazone 23 OVA 1. One of the breakout hits of the early years of original video animation, we get to see all the tropes and other things we have taken for granted in modern anime with this 1985 release. Besides a great soundtrack and some potention inspiration for things like The Matrix and Dark City, there's also the sci-fi lineage from some of the minds behind Macross, Yamato, Gundam, Legend of the Galactic Heroes, Urusei Yatsura, and so much more. From government cover-ups, deepfake AI, prolific product placement, motorcycle robots, and the always fun plot explanation over a sex scene montage (which we call "sexplanation"), grab your leather biker gear and have a listen. Because it's time to get into the zone. The Megazone.

On this episode, Dennis, Kate, and Ed go over the main bonus features on the fourth Blu-ray disc of the 2014 Cowboy Bebop home release. Most of the segments deal with the production for the dub and the dub cast. So let's deep dive into some insights we've gleaned from "Memo from Bebop: The Dub Sessions Remembered" and "Dinner Aboard the Bebop." Bebop dub fans, this one's for you.

Join Dennis, Ed, Kate, and Karen as we discuss our final recap episode for Cowboy Bebop. So many new emotions during our entire rewatch, and it all culminates to this one. There's a lot of goodbyes for some of our favorite characters, and unsurprisingly, they hit just as hard emotionally now, if not more than when we first watched the series. Friendship, love, trust, betrayal, family, home, farewells, honor, duty, revenge--and we still have to properly get introduced to Julia, too. Hope you enjoyed rewatching this along with us. And if you don't have Cowboy Bebop in your personal collection, well, you know where to find a copy. You're gonna carry that weight.

We were special guests on The Bebop Beat: A Cowboy Bebop Rewatch Podcast for their Cowboy Funk episode! Go check them out!

Jul 29, 2021

On this episode, Kate, Karen, Dennis, and Ed discuss their next batch of episodes for Cowboy Bebop: episodes 14-17. There's Ed's chess match, even more relevance to the space gate crash 50 years ago, Harvey Keitel, film noir, Captain America, the start of Faye's tragic past, and lest we not forget, some mushroom hunting. So make sure those rations aren't expired, it only counts if you catch the brains behind the operation, and watch out for scam artists, as it's time for more Bebop. See you, space cowboy.

On this episode, Kate, Karen, Dennis, Ed, and Garrett meet up again to discuss the next round of Cowboy Bebop episodes with 10-13. There's some of Jet's backstory, a sci-fi horror movie homage, and the first two-parter with Jupiter Jazz. Other talking points include Jet being very dad like, more not great cocktails, amazing music choices, commentary from Wendee Lee, and how experimental drugs can have adverse side effects. All right amigo, let's find ourselves a bounty.

On this episode, it's the first of many big, in person recording meets again as hosts Ed, Diana, Sam, Kate, and Dennis get to record in person together for the 1995 anthology film Memories. Based on the works of Katsuhiro Otomo, we discuss all three segments in reverse order: starting with Cannon Fodder, keeping Stink Bomb in the middle, and ending with Magnetic Rose. We also talk about Sam and Diana's Memories collection, smell being the strongest memory, and how watching the film was sometimes too harsh of a reminder of recent history.

On this episode, Dennis, Ed, and Kate review the very adult anime Golgo 13: The Professional. This 1983 film about one of the longest running manga series currently still being published has a lot to offer. While some things might not hold up, we try to look past some of the flaws to see what's there for fans of Duke Togo and his assassination escapades. From all the sex, violence, car chases, and thrilling action sequences, it's really hard boiled.

On this episode, Karen, Kate, Ed, and Dennis are joined by returning guest Rishon discuss Studio Ghibli's Howl's Moving Castle. Nominated for a Best Animated Feature Academy Award, we go for a real deep dive with this one. We discuss some of the book differences, dub differences, Sophie's nihilism, and just how enraptured we are with most of the cast. And since it's been a while that we've covered something some of us physically own, we get the return of the special features segment! Stick around for an extra long post credits stinger, as we end the episode talking about a Q&A Toshio Suzuki recently did on Twitter discussing many things Howl.

One this episode, Ed, Kate, and Dennis go over the 1991 OVA series Bubblegum Crash, the sequel to Bubblegum Crisis. The Knight Sabers are back after a brief hiatus to stop more robot threats. But with Priss' original Japanese voice actress unable to return, does this series hold up without one of the core members? We'll discuss the look, feel, and sound of this sequel series, while also poking fun at some of the fun English words seen on screen, some new life choices for some of the Knight Sabers, more sci-fi franchise references, and even some new suit upgrades. Hop on your motorcycle and crank up that J-rock playlist, because we're going back to Mega Tokyo.

Ryoko's replaced by a doppleganger, who of course falls in love with Tenchi. And some potential inlaws from Jurai also happen to visit earth! We also discuss some dangling plot points like the possible Jurai spy, was Seiryo even necessary, those higher dimensional beings, and what exactly is happening with the politics of Jurai?

On this episode, club members Dennis, Ed, Garrett, Kate, and Karen discuss a Toonami classic with the first 4 episodes of Tenchi Muyo OVA (known a Tenchi Muyo Ryo-Ohki). Now, it has been a long period of time since most of us have watched it on Toonami, so there won't be too many comparisons between the North American broadcast versus the uncut OVA episodes. But there are plenty of places where you can find the differences. But, we get to meet come classic favorite characters in Tenchi, Ryoko, Ayeka, Sasami, and Mihoshi in these first four episodes. And we get reacquainted with the fun costume and space ship designs, the log technology of the planet Jurai, an earlier than expected hot springs episode, and a spirited discussion of the shape of Tenchi's head.

On this episode, it's our penultimate Trigun rewatch discussion, for episodes 18-22. There are fewer laughs, but the drama is intense! There's more Gung-Ho Guns, more tests for Vash's convictions, and even Wolfwood's relationship with the team is pushed to the brink. And how long do you think that timeskip was supposed to be? Two years or less? So listen in with Dennis, Ed, Kate, and Garrett, as you recover from your holiday feasting with some Trigun talk.

On this episode, we have Dennis, Ed, Garrett, Karen, and Kate going over episodes 14-17 of Trigun. The Gung-Ho Guns are on a full on rampage taking on Vash the Stampede. But, we're also dealing with more members of the Nebraska family? Legato also loves eating dessert. Is Vash the Stampede really sexist? And finally starting on Vash's backstory.

On this episode, Garrett, Karen, Ed, Kate, and Dennis discuss up to the halfway point of Trigun, with episodes 10-13. Wolfwood sticking around some more is always a good thing. We get introduced to the first of the Gung-Ho Guns. We also discuss some not so fine fashion highlights with two villain characters. Oct 15, 2020

On this episode, we have Kate, Garrett, Ed, and Dennis returning to talk about Trigun, episodes 5-9. It's our first multi-part episode, with the first four being pretty standalone. However, this time we try to figure out if it's more of a four-part episode arc or just a two-episode arc. They all kind of lead right into each other. We do get into the introduction of Nicholas D. Wolfwood. And in this batch, it's the first time we see Vash fire his trademark silver revolver. And Dennis keeps track of Vash's bullet count! You'll find that at the end in our stinger section.

Sep 30, 2020

On this episode, Dennis, Ed, Garrett, Karen, and Kate go over the 1998 series Trigun, an anime with a Western flair that was more of a hit in the West than in Japan. But unlike The Big O, Trigun was still able to mostly tell its story with a full 26 episode run. For these first four episodes, we get introduced to the main trio of protagonists, and since it's Kate's first time watching the series ever, we're all very interested in what she thinks. With a strong comedic start with hints of the action to come, let's go back to the the binary sun-kissed planet of Gunsmoke, and follow the Humanoid Typhoon on his adventures.
