Vintage Anime Club Podcast

A group of friends, a disc of anime, a bottle of wine...better make it two. We're an anime podcast taking a look back at some older anime titles on physical media, and seeing if they still hold up or not. Sometimes time lets us appreciate overlooked titles, while other instances require us to remove those rose-tinted glasses. So grab a glass of wine and have a listen.

Listen in as we try to make sense of Galatea and Mason's plans.

On this episode, join Ed, Kate, and Dennis as they discuss the second batch of episodes for Bubblegum Crisis Tokyo 2040. Maki Stingray finally joins the story and brings up even more questions about the Stingray family. We also have Nene & Linna getting to know each other better, a glimpes into the earthquake six years prior to the start of the show, Mason being extra creepy with his secretary, Priss giving a bad interview, and one very dark episode for this show.

Sep 15, 2022

On this episode, join Ed, Karen, Kate, Garrett, & Dennis as we discuss the first four episodes of Bubblegum Crisis Tokyo 2040. This 1998 remake was done after Studio AIC obtained full rights to the Bubblegum Crisis property, and now they get to try to tell a complete story. As big fans of the original OVA series, it's hard not to compare the two, but we sure find the good kinds of comparisons and contrasts. From a different viewpoint character, much different music, and different story twists, it's also cool seeing what stayed the same for the Knight Sabers in both versions.

We have a stacked episode this time with hosts Dennis, Ed, Kate, & Garrett joined by returning guest Bryan and brand new guest Julia to discuss Mobile Suit Gundam: Char's Counterattack. Surprisingly, it's our longest episode to date! Some topics discussed include Amuro being a short king, is Quess annoying, Char's motivations, is Quess annoying, more Gundam bad dads, and is Quess annoying.

Thanks to our guests Bryan (@DarkKingZoro) & Julia (listen to the Dungeons & Drama Nerds podcast, Lancer campaign).

On this episode, Dennis enlists the help of special guest Jet in order to help Garret, Kate, and Karen make sense of Legend of the Galactic Heroes: Overturue to a New War. We're just going to shorten it to Overture for the rest of this podcast description. We talk what helps Overture stand out from the first two OVA episodes of LOGH, Dennis tries to track who's who with all these nameless characters with lots of speaking lines, Reinhard showing some more character, getting tired of Yang's ho-hum attitude, all of the death flags, love triangles, secret crushes, and Garrett comes clean about the recording for LOGH movie 1. It'll all make sense if you listen. And if not, there's always the Takarazuka Revue version. Pour yourself a glass of red tea and brandy, because once again, we're going to space.

Many thanks to returning special guest Jet (@jetspectacular)

Aug 4, 2022

On this episode, join Dennis, Ed, Garret, Kate, and Karen as we take our first dive into one of anime's tougher fandoms to get into: Legend of the Galactic Heroes. We're starting with 1988's pilot OVA/first movie, My Conquest is the Sea of Stars. Two warring factions with their respective brilliant strategists who are still trying to earn the respect of their commanding officers, it's our first look at Yang Wen-Li and Reinhard von MĂĽsel (who later becomes Reinhard von Lohengramm). We make some obvious comparisons to the Gundam, Macross, and Star Blazers franchises, appreciating the classical music after watching Princess Tutu, figuring out if these military tactics are actually brilliant or not, so much laserdisc talk, and too many mentions of skirts. So whether you're taking 5 ships or 8,000 ships for a diversion, we've got you covered.

For our final Princess Tutu podcast, Kristen returns to join Karen, Kate, Ed, and Dennis for the final four episode recap. Listen as we discuss out Fakir gets over his writer's block, Autor doesn't overstay his welcome, where is the Lake of Despair, it's time to D-D-D-Drosselmeyer, pesky jewelry clasps, doubling back, and an old Las Vegas duo act. And as the curtain falls on this story, will it be a tragedy or a happy ending? Well listener, we'll let you decide.

Over the course of this five-episode batch, there are even more twists and turns than ever! We learn a lot more about Fakir's past, more mysteries surrounding the town and the animal people, the shool's tallest ballet student, someone's in love with Karon, who is the library kid, a cult against Drosselmeyer, a rare pro-wrestling reference, and where the Raven ranks in terms of bad anime dads.

Ed experiements watching half an episode a day to have a somewhat similar experience to when it originally aired in Japan. We're introduced to our big bad of the series, The Raven. Mytho and Kraehe get some fabulous, feathery costumes along with some new admirers. Is Pike switching her love interest? And who is this curious little girl with a funky beat? On this episode, join Ed, Kate, Karen, and special guests Sanjay and Rishon as they continue with the Princess Tutu rewatch, covering episodes 5 through 9. Things are taking more interesting turns as Mytho regains more pieces of his heart. We talk about a different version of a Fire Festival, what are the differences between a crow and a raven, how deep do Fakir's scars go, and...well let's just put a pin in that one for the time being. May 4, 2022

On this episode, join Karen, Kate, Ed, and Dennis as they discuss the 2002 series Princess Tutu. We somehow avoid a major recording disaster with Dennis forgetting the actual microphones, so this episode's audio sounds different than what you're used to hearing. But we still have much to discuss, such as all of the dance battles, what we think happens in Once Upon a Time, why do people like Mytho, more animals than we realize, and is Neko-sensei worse than Kimura-sensei? Maybe you can help us decide. Un, Deux, Trois! It's time to discuss the first four episodes of Princess Tutu.

On this episode, join Dennis, Ed, Garrett, and Kate as they discuss the 1986 Studio Ghibli film Castle in the Sky. We couldn't go over the 1989 dub as the Disney version is the one that's easily streamable. Nonetheless, we still have a lot to talk about, such as never trusting people who always wear sunglasses, sky pirate etiquette, is it steampunk, the Dragon's Lair, Terminator robots, and just where did that apple core go.

On this episode, join Dennis, Diana, Ed, Karen, and Kate as they discuss 1995's Ruin Explorers - Fam & Ihirie OVA series. And before that, we also get into some of our highlights of the Winter 2022 anime season plus looking forward to Spy x Fa--I mean the Spring 2022 anime season. Other talking points include Diana's origin with Ruin Explorers, comparisons to Slayers and Lodoss Wars, which anime characters does Ihrie remind Dennis of, what is Fam's D&D class, Wacky Races, and is Lyle like Steve Urkel? Drop that Magical Beat, and don't set off any traps. It's time for Ruin Explorers!

On this episode, we have Dennis, Ed, Kate, and Karen to discuss the 1991 OVA series Sukeban Deka, aka Delinquent Detective. Only two episodes, expired North American license, and out of print but still cheap to find second hand? Sounds like the perfect series for us to cover. What can one student as an undercover detective armed with only a yo-yo do? Quite a lot actually. Listen is as we discuss school bus safety, tracing in the art world, sibling rivalry, dramatic still frame shots, and Junko's hard life. So badge up, because mom needs saving. On this episode, it took almost two years but we're finally covering the infamous Garzey's Wing, the 1996 OVA series by Yoshiyuki Tomino of Gundam fame. Join Dennis, Ed, Kate, and Karen as they go through both the Japanese and English versions of the series, try to make sense of the plot, butcher the pronunciation of a bunch of character names and places, and maybe have a too much wine for once. Plus, with the the help of some blogs, we also get some insight into the source material novels for Garzey's Wing, too. So summon the spirit of a Japanese man, get whisked away to another world by Yamato Takeru no Mikoto, and don't forget your swimsuit for the high school reunion pool party. We're heading to Byston Well.

On this episode, join Ed, Kate, and Dennis as they discuss the 1997 prequel OVA series Sakura Wars. Based on the long running Sega game series of the same name, but taking place before the events of the first game, we want to know how well this OVA holds up especially for those who are unfamiliar with the game series. Ed also gives us a deep dive into the series itself along with some historical importance it has on Japanese audiences. We also talk about steampunk mechs, the dual life of a stage performer and soldier, if granny deems you worthy, and comparisons to another Taisho era based anime that involves fighting demons. So put on those fancy clothes, because we're heading to the theater. Enjoy!

It's a jam packed full host podcast with Diana, Sam, Karen, Kate, Garrett, Ed, and Dennis! There is quite a bit that happens in the second half of the Magic User's Club OVA. There's a combo of a beach PLUS hot springs episode, yet it's actually not as ecchi as we'd think! Some insight on the pasts of both Takakura and Miyama. There's also some school hijinks like a festival prep, confession culture, and sneaking in after school is closed. Join us as we discuss the real question that's been on our minds since the start: will Jeff do something? Listen in and find out.

On this episode, we've got a full clubhouse with Diana, Sam, Ed, Karen, and Dennis hosting our first podcast of 2022 with Magic Users Club OVA, episodes 1-3. High school magic users versus alien robots with a little bit of ecchi thrown in? What's not to love? Takakura and Aburatsubo have to show three new members the ropes: second years Sae and Nanaka plus first year Akane. And on top of all of this, there's the antagonistic manga club plus two very in your face investigative journalists causing trouble and distractions. So don your wizard or witch hat, prep your magic wand and magic cards, and pad that broom you're riding on because the wooden handle is very uncomfortable. On this episode, Dennis is the lone host over the holiday weekend, but there's a cavalcade of guests. With returning guests Eron and Alcuin, we're also joined by first time guest Yume to discuss Yoshikazu Yasuhiko's 1986 Greek mythology inspired anime Arion. Will our familiarity with Greek myth be a benefit or a drawback to this story? Arion's motivations may change from finding a cure for Demeter to rescuing his sister Resphoine, but he'll meet a host of Olympian gods and heroes to face Zeus. So form an adventuring party. Whether it's a young, plucky thief, or a monstrous triclops, or some dude in a lion mask, get ready. Because it's time to attack and dethrone a god.

On this episode, join hosts Garrett, Kate, Ed, and Dennis as we discuss the 1989 film Little Nemo: Adventures in Slumberland. Similar to our Unico watch, we discuss if this actually is an anime title or just anime adjacent? Many of your favorite dreams and least favorite nightmares as a child are featured, such as trains, clowns falling, monsters, magic, flying, derigibles, and a lot more. Except for that one nightmare when you're late for school or work and you don't have any bottoms on. So take a trip down to Slumberland with us, where you'll meet King Grandfather Santa, goat powered vehicles, a flying bed, and pajamas every which way you look.
