Vintage Anime Club Podcast

A group of friends, a disc of anime, a bottle of wine...better make it two. We're an anime podcast taking a look back at some older anime titles on physical media, and seeing if they still hold up or not. Sometimes time lets us appreciate overlooked titles, while other instances require us to remove those rose-tinted glasses. So grab a glass of wine and have a listen.

A group of friends, a disc of anime, a bottle of wine... Better make it two bottles.

Dec 10, 2020

In our last regularly scheduled episode of 2020, Garrett, Ed, Kate, Karen, and Dennis discuss the final 4 episodes of Trigun, along with their impression of the series after revisiting it finally. Only a few Gung-Ho Guns are left, and Vash's convictions are pushed to their absolute limits. The club also discusses some of their favorite anime titles of 2020: new anime series, returning anime series, and an honorable mention. Happy holidays to you all! See you in 2021!

Nov 26, 2020

On this episode, it's our penultimate Trigun rewatch discussion, for episodes 18-22. There are fewer laughs, but the drama is intense! There's more Gung-Ho Guns, more tests for Vash's convictions, and even Wolfwood's relationship with the team is pushed to the brink. And how long do you think that timeskip was supposed to be? Two years or less? So listen in with Dennis, Ed, Kate, and Garrett, as you recover from your holiday feasting with some Trigun talk.

On this episode, we have Dennis, Ed, Garrett, Karen, and Kate going over episodes 14-17 of Trigun. The Gung-Ho Guns are on a full on rampage taking on Vash the Stampede. But, we're also dealing with more members of the Nebraska family? Legato also loves eating dessert. Is Vash the Stampede really sexist? And finally starting on Vash's backstory.

On this episode, Garrett, Karen, Ed, Kate, and Dennis discuss up to the halfway point of Trigun, with episodes 10-13. Wolfwood sticking around some more is always a good thing. We get introduced to the first of the Gung-Ho Guns. We also discuss some not so fine fashion highlights with two villain characters. And it's been so long for those of us that are revisiting the series, we completely forgot about the recap episode.

Oct 15, 2020

On this episode, we have Kate, Garrett, Ed, and Dennis returning to talk about Trigun, episodes 5-9. It's our first multi-part episode, with the first four being pretty standalone. However, this time we try to figure out if it's more of a four-part episode arc or just a two-episode arc. They all kind of lead right into each other. We do get into the introduction of Nicholas D. Wolfwood. And in this batch, it's the first time we see Vash fire his trademark silver revolver. And Dennis keeps track of Vash's bullet count! You'll find that at the end in our stinger section.

On this episode, Dennis, Ed, Garrett, Karen, and Kate go over the 1998 series Trigun, an anime with a Western flair that was more of a hit in the West than in Japan. But unlike The Big O, Trigun was still able to mostly tell its story with a full 26 episode run. For these first four episodes, we get introduced to the main trio of protagonists, and since it's Kate's first time watching the series ever, we're all very interested in what she thinks. With a strong comedic start with hints of the action to come, let's go back to the the binary sun-kissed planet of Gunsmoke, and follow the Humanoid Typhoon on his adventures.

On this episode, Ed, Diana, Dennis, and Kate are joined by returning guest Michelle and first time guest Kristen to talk about Sailor Moon R: The Movie. One of the most recognized anime titles ever, we definitely wanted some other experts on to share how much this series means to them. Viz put out an uncut remastered release on streaming and home release, but that also doesn't mean we can't talk about the DiC release from the 90s either. So sit back, reminisce, and enjoy the episode. Otherwise, in the name of the moon... we'll... release another episode. No punishment involved!

Thanks to special guests Kristen (@KoriStarfire) & Michelle (@iamchubbybunny) for joining us!

On this episode of the Vintage Anime Club Podcast, we go back to Tomobiki where the local high school is ramping up the hustle and bustle before the school festival tomorrow. Except that it keeps being tomorrow. So join Diana, Ed, Kate, Sam, Dennis, and returning special guest Eron as we discuss Urusei Yatura Movie 2: Beautiful Dreamer, which was released in 1984. The Urashima Taro references are very much at the forefront of this one, along with a few other things that we deep dive into, with some of Oshii's early experimentation with film, if this needed to actually be with Urusei Yatsura characters, inspiration for other films, and the contrast in reception between this versus the first film Only You.

Thanks to Eron (@eronrauch) for being a guest, and check out his digital photobook about locations in Yakuza 0 called "Such is the Power of The Empty Lot," available from Heterotopias.

On this episode we have Diana, Ed, Karen, Kate, Dennis, and the return of Sam to discuss the first Urusei Yatsura movie Only You, released in 1983. Based on Rumiko Takahashi's first serialized manga, and the feature length directorial debut for Mamoru Oshii, we see glimpses of story, design, and direction in their more globally known works that we're more familiar with. We can't help but bring up some Ranma comparisons, why Ataru is surrounded by all the ladies, weird alien customs, one of anime's earliest himbos, Wedding Crashers, and puns for days. CW: We also discuss briefly about the scandal with the writer for Shonen Jump's Act-Age manga in our news section.

Urusei Yatsura: Only You is out of print on DVD and not available on Blu-ray yet, but Discotek does have plans to re-release it soon.

Special thanks to Alec of Anime Los Angeles for lending us his DVD copy of the Animeigo release.

On this episode, Dennis, Ed, Garrett, and Kate discuss the 1987 anthology film Robot Carnival. Nine directers with their own segments delve into the theme of robots with their short films, and we go over each of them. There's quite a bit of action, drama, suspense, romance, and even some creep factor. Come for the robots, stay for the robots. No matter the destruction they cause.

On this episode, we're going back to the fun, fantasy anime universe with Slayers season 2, more commonly known as Slayers Next! Even though it's been only a few months since we finished season 1, we thought we could use a little bit of fun by revisiting this series. Ed and Diana lead the discussion also featuring Garrett, Karen, Kate, and Dennis. We discuss recurring gag comfort food, not trusting a priest again, finding out another of Lina's weaknesses, secret secrets are no fun, and Mr. Freeze.

Hope everyone is being safe out there. On this episode, the club gets together online again to discuss Miyazaki's first ever directed feature, Lupin III: The Castle of Cagliostro. This 1979 film was made by a bunch of people who would eventually make up the early core of Studio Ghibli. So it's a Ghibli film in spirit, but not technically a Ghibli film. We go over some of the reception to Lupin's portrayal, some differences in the Streamline version that's on Netflix, Lupin's age, old currency, extreme Home Alone, and so much more. Hope you have enough wine with you to enjoy this one, because it's a long one. And don't forget to wash your hands!

With self-quarantining and social distancing well underway, we scrap our initial choice for this episode to one that we can all stream legally and discuss over Discord. So instead of Garzey's Wing, club members Dennis, Ed, Kate, and Karen discuss 1989's Riding Bean from Kenichi Sonoda. We're revisiting Chicago in an anime again! There's exciting car chase sequences, a tricked out super car, Mission Impossible style disguises, a different looking Rally Vincent, what is and isn't bulletproof, and some major gaslighting.

On this episode, the crew goes extra long after a corrupted hard drive loses the first half of our Gundam 0080 talk. So instead, Dennis, Ed, Karen, Kate, and returning guest Jet discuss all 6 episodes of War in the Pocket. We discuss Al's super powers of marathon running, terrible trade skills, Chris being the best girl next door, Garcia and Mikhail's dub accents, crocodile tears, and bad Federation policies. So grab yourself a hamburger, because daddy's coming home for Christmas.

On this episode the crew goes over the 1995 OVA series Gunsmith Cats, from Kenichi Sonoda. Action, thrills, excitement -- all in the classic anime setting of...Chicago? Hope you like action and fast cars. Where have we heard that tagline before? We discuss May's psyche, the picturesque look of the city, searching for a private yacht club in South Michigan, and why is Rally allowed to be so heavily armed as a private citizen. Featuring the voices of Dennis, Ed, Karen, Kate, and Garrett.

On this episode, we have more than a full clubhouse to discuss the animated short video of On Your Mark, with music by Chage & Aska and animation by Studio Ghibli from 1995. Diana, Ed, Kate, Dennis, Karen, Garrett, and Sam are joined by special guest Eron, making his first actual episode appearance (he was on the Project A-Ko Facebook Live we did on New Years Eve). There's a brief history on the super duo CHAGE & ASKA, trying to explain what went on in the music video visuals, some inspirations behind Miyazaki's imagery, and surprisingly so much more than what would be your normal music video discussion.

Thanks to special guest Eron (@eronrauch) for joining us on this episode!

On Your Mark is not available for purchase in North America, but you can officially own it in the Studio Ghibli Short Film Collection that was released in July of 2019.
